Wireless access to the shared Internet connection? [internal pci] [wireless router]

05 Oct

Q: Howdy.

I wonder if the following is possible, and if so, what I needed to implement them. I have a laptop with wireless built in my apartment I have a , so I can get online without problems. When I go home to my parents house I want to be able to see the Internet as well. They have DSL, but they are an DSL modem. So theres no real way to implement a default router. I wonder if I can “Allow other users of this computer internet access and connect a or wireless access point to NIC their computer and the shared Internet connection to get so my laptop can access.

I hope that it can be done, but do not really know if just one access point would do the trick or if I would have a real router. Im not worried about DHCP and the like (I do not think) so I do not think I need all the features a router posesses.

Any suggestions / instructions on the subject would be appreciated. Thanks!

Best Answer: first: buy a lan cable configured have it configured to be a "straight connection"
2nd: connect the two lan
3rd: set your PC's ip to 192.168.1.1, and have your laptop's lan ip to 192.16.1.xxx with gateway 192.168.1.1
4th: go to network connection > wireless connection > look for share internet connection

Re:so it's like using a cross-over cable only for a wireless connection…?

Re:This is really a simple problem. Just go buy a USB or PCI wireless card for your parents computer. Plug in the wireless card and install the drivers. Goto the DSL Modem Network adaptor and enable (Share this internet connection) in the properties.
This will set up the Wireless NIC to have an ip of 192.168.0.1 and give out address on 192.168.0.2-254. Then configure your Wireless NIC to be in AD-HOCK mode and set the SSID to anything. On your laptop, set your wireless NIC to also be in AD-HOCK mode and put in the same SSID.. Problem solved.

Re:If the box is a windows XP box, just wizard it.

What you need is an AP (not the router). If you get a router (sometimes cheaper and easier to find) then disable DHCP on the router, setup ICS on the home box (with DSL Modem inside). Plug from home box's ethernet to one the AP. Should work like magic.

If you get a router, plug the home PC into one of the REGULAR ports, do NOT use the internet port. This will make the router function as an AP on the network.

Re:Where are you that modems are hard to find? I would suggest you not buy anything retail if that is what your talking about. Anyway, if you have a router/AP combo then disable the DHCP server on that device and omit the WAN port. If your LAN ports are not auto MDI/MDX then you may need a X-over cable from NIC to switch.

Re:right, ICS is what i want to do, i just didn't know if i could simply "plug in" a router/AP… and if i can, which one would be better suited for the task… not to mention, external DSL modems are hard to find…retail at least.

Re:You could get an external dsl modem for them or setup ICS (internet connection sharing). It basically allows you to hook into the nic and use the connection. I think you would need to have DHCP turned on for the router that you would hook up but I'm not positive on that.
