Cable modem upstairs, downstairs router, will this work? [cable modem] [wan port]

Q: I have a computer also addicted to the Internet via a cable modem. I would like to set up three computers downstairs. Can I use a CAT5 cable to the router from the cable modem to the WAN port and then run another CAT5 a backup on your computer over one of the ports on the router.

Q: I have an old P-133 is running like a gateway, since everything is connected, the other machines seem their Internet access have slowed considerably. Will a faster gateway help?

Expanding on my set-up a bit: 977 503 977 503 Cable modem to a P-133 with 2 NIC then go to a 10/100 switch, then to 2 other comps, one is a P-III 550, the other is a P- III 800.

 

A hub will work just as well as a switch for my home network? [cable modem] [home lan]

Q: Im going to be connecting 3 computers to my cable modem. I have 2 computers connected through two network cards in a PC and some software sharing. I would appreciate third computer, I was wondering whether I would be a hub or a switch to get to add? Thank you.

Q: My computer usually takes about 30 seconds to load up. Then again decided to take over a minuet. Nothing is installed. I noticed that it happened when the cable modem was, but that may not have something to do with the right drive? I mean nothing was installed. I have a 100gig drive partitioned in Win98 and XP Pro running on 7200RPMs. Why should something that just suddenly take longer to load up? Any ideas?

Q: Im actually posting this for a friend. He has two computers, one laptop running XP Home, and a desktop running Win2k. They are connected to a wireless netowrk cable modem. They were both parts of the internet perfectly. He wanted the upgrade to Win2K WinXP Pro. He installed it, when the error occurred saying “these machines are not compatible with XP, that the only thing cameup was a printer. So he usually installed XP, everything was fine. Q: My cable modem and the router on the first floor office. I am working on the third floor and the connection is a bit dodgy. I will not install the modem and router just as I want my main PC connected via cable. What I can on the third floor of the reception improve?

have connected to a linksys connected to cable modem

ips:
i have Linksys set to 192.168.0.1 with dhcp to start at 0.101
the d-link is a static ip 192.168.1.1 on which the 0100 linksys
dlink pc pc is not 1.100
linksys 0.101

firewall:
on the Linksys 0100 I manually

Can I have both a router and ICS?

Basically my router is right across the house. I dont want to spend money to buy a wire and then I walk through the wall. I dont want to spend any money effectively.
