Partitioned XP and 98 (98 Want to remove) [factory default] [recovery cd]

03 Sep

Q: I was performing my routine format of the quarter and I chose, instead of an upgrade, new installation of Windows XP. Prior to this I ran the Compaq to restore your computer to factory settings. It does this by spreading that everything is stored on a partition of my C: the name D. I thought “New installation” would completely delete my HDs, but it seemed to have installed XP (or at least Windows and Program Files) on all three of my drives. (C:, G: and D:) If I restart I get the option to start XP or 1998. XP runs great but 98 is still in two colors without any drivers it wants. Another strange thing that the XP installation did was my name for all stations. My CD-ROMs containing E: and F: are now G: and F:. My hard drives were that D:. G: and C: now E:, D: and C: but now the new D: (OEF) is the “standard” HD because when I go to install an app or something, it says D: Program Files blah blah blah.

I know very well that I could just ignore Windows 98, but I think it as a waste of space. Any help is appreciated and I hope I did not sound too annoying. This problem is at least what I need.

Best Answer: If you installed both 98 and XP in the same drive, then you will just have to make a backup of your files and delete the whole C:// partition. If you installed them on separate drives, then just delete the partition witht he 98 installed on it.

It's not a huge hard drive which is why I didn't go NTFS. :( Can anyone else help?

Its not the size that counts, its how much you really like it :)

Yeah, that fixed it, I'm a tard. One more problem, everytime I start up I get scandisk saying that the HD has to be checked everytime I boot up for consistency. WTF?

If you are using FAT32 it serves you right. No clue though. Windows is too complicated for me…

I searched for my boot.ini file but only found boot.ini.backup. How do I edit it? This is what it contains:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

Good thinking, man.

There is no need to search for the file, I told you where it is. You probably didnt turn off that file hiding BS Microsoft has set by default (HOW CAN YOU WORK LIKE THAT?! :P ).

Re:Format the Windows 98 partition and edit your c:\boot.ini. Then convert everything to NTFS and you should be set. (conversion optional, but no reason to use fat32 :) )
