Here, non-scripting System Administrator,: D looking for your help.

I did not know whether it belonged in OS or software, but that it is an OS (WinXP) I have here .

I run a domain at home. I have five boxes that run F @ H and other things to do, all the boxes have the same username and password. When Im done with them, I lock the desktop for security reasons. I control it all from a script written box.

Can one that when I run, the desktops of all the boxes open? I.e. It would be “Hit” CTRL-ALT-DEL “and enter the correct username and password?

Couple of possibilites. DNet had an option where a client could email you the logs on a regular basis… is is possible the F@H also does and could send you updates from each machine?

The other thought is that you just create a shortcut on your desktop to each of the folders on the other machines that hold the log files and you could just look at them every now and then.

The application should run as a service, so you can start/stop the service remotely, w/o logging in to the console.

…and he's right…C-A-D isn't scriptable.

Are you using remote control software on the machines or accessing them through a KVM? If you are using remote control software you may be able to record a Macro that will do this for you.

The more ubiquitous Unreal Engine has a different name added to his long list of publisher license holders. Electronic Arts and game and technology developer Epic Games today announced a licensing agreement to Epics Unreal Engine 3 technology for powering a number of next-generation games. The publisher adds the engine, with its own internal tools for the production of the game projects currently under development.

The technology is already confirmed to power the long-awaited next-gen games on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles as BioWares Mass Effect, Silicon Knights Too Human (a game that, like Gamespot Rumor Control has recently confirmed, is to continue to use the engine despite rumors to the contrary) and Epics Unreal Tournament 2007 and own Gears of War.

EA studio president Paul Lee said that the deal is part of the strategy from EA to “licensed edge tools, such as cutting the Unreal Engine 3 and combine them with] own [EAs systems to state-of-the-art development of technology. ” Epic vice president Mark Rein added that his company “obviously pleased that the Unreal Engine 3 license to EA, the world leader in our industry. “Neither company has named no games that use the technology going forward will make. There's a difference between a frustration over features/bugs and a game being just plain crappy.

I guess the difference between you and I is that I think most of the games that come from EA are, in fact, crappy.

Actually the Doom3 engine is really well done.It has really good lighting effects and shadowing. It runs pretty flawlessly on most hardware too.

The only thing I'm wondering is why there hasn't been any releases based on the Source Engine worth mentioning. The source engine is supurb and extremely fast on a variety of hardware and it still has some of the best looking water I've seen. I wish someone would use the engine for a stand alone project (unless there's a reason they can't and if so please elaborate).

Not quite an oxymoron, but thanks for trying. I didn't say anything about "incomplete" game, or "buggy as hell" games. Besides, who's to say a game is incomplete?

Games can still be great fun despite irritating bugs and things left out that the customer wants. Take BF2, for example. It's a great game, but it's stupid little things like the red tag over friendly heads that take forever to fix (among other things), and not listening to the players when they scream and yell for things, like nerfing particular areas of the game, etc.

There's a difference between a frustration over features/bugs and a game being just plain crappy.

Nah… the average Joe doesn't even know what a game engine is, let alone who provided the one in any given game. At most, this buys EA a second chance with some of the more hardcore gamers.

ET: Quake Wars looks like it could be good, but iD's latest engine doesnt seem to have sold well, unlike Unreal Engine 3 with (from counting Wikipedia) 125+ games being made, and according to another source, over 300 titles in the works.

Make it a 48X Lite-On…simple firmware flash! Also, even if you don't choose to do that, get the latest firmware for it because they added Mt. Rainer support and changed the drive from Z-CLV to P-CAV in the latest firmwares…:)

If you were on a budget, get the Lite-on, it's not as reliable as Plextor, but reliable enough. You don't hear too many stories about Lite-on drives dying.

Walls, microwaves, and other fun stuff will interfere with your wifi connection. A neighbour's juiced up CB antenna could cause issues. When I lived in one apartment building on the 15th floor my laptop could connect to the coffee shop two blocks north of me because of the clear line of site.

Best thing to do is walk around your house with the ipod checking for wifi signal strength. There must be an app for that.

The longest unamplified link seems to be 304 km, not that you should expect the same.

this will access shares on IPADDRESS without the need for netbios/TCPIP browsing.

you MIGHT be able to get your friend to open up a port or two on the proxy that will allow you to get through, but i'm not sure.

one other thing…since i only know the ip address of the host computer, and all the other computers in the house get their IP address from that computer through the proxy, is there any way to be able to see them too? it wouldn't let me do a share on the networked computers from the host computer so i can't do that way…any suggestions?

as long as it's just you seeing them, you're the only one who needs to edit that file

i'd say open lmhosts in notepad and see how the ip's and computer names are formatted, then put in your friends info EXACTLY the same way, else it won't work

1. You won't need AV.
2. You can use the internet to install the codecs, then you don't need the internet. Try rhythmbox and vlc media player.
3. The config files for the system certainly aren't written in C, so that won't help you. The source code for the Linux kernel is available, but it will blow your mind if you are a beginner.

This is what's known as inter-process communication, or "IPC." There are 3 (maybe 4) different methods commonly used on unix (including linux).

The first and most simple way of sending messages to process is via signals (try man 3 signal and man 7 signal). Signals carry no data, so they're no good for data transfer, but they're good for telling a process "hey, XYZ type of event happened." Signals all have names, and are named SIGSOMETHING where SOMETHING is a very short (2-5 letters or so) description of what the signal is for.

The signal everyone is probably most familiar with is SIGINT, which is what gets sent to a console program when you hit control-C. SIGHUP means "hangup" and for daemons, usually prompts a re-read of configuration files. The "original" (I think, anyways) meaning of hangup is that the parent process (often your shell, due to you "hanging up" your modem in the old days perhaps) has exited, and thus many apps exit when they receive SIGHUP. Some other common signals are SIGKILL, which kills a process on the spot, SIGSTOP (control-Z in a shell), which pauses a program and sends it to the background (and its counterpart SIGCONT which wakes a process back up), and SIGWINCH, which tells an app that the terminal size has changed (this is how console apps resize themselves when you resize your terminal).

All signals can be caught by programs except SIGKILL and SIGSTOP. Programs often catch SIGINT to clean up before they exit, or catch SIGWINCH to resize themselves accordingly. The kill(1) program is what you use from the command line to send signals. You can send any signal you want with kill, but without specifying one it will send SIGTERM (which is essentially the same as SIGINT/control-C).

As far as I know, signals can only be sent to a process by its owner, or the superuser.

The second method of IPC is via fifos. Fifo means "first in, first out." Fifos are also known as "named pipes," because they're like a pipe, but with a filename. Following the concept that "everything is a file," security with fifos just relies on whatever permissions you have given them via chmod/chown/chgrp. Pipes are a bit odd in that you can play with them on the command line like files, but they are blocking, like sockets. Open up two xterms, in one, do mkfifo foobar; echo hello > foobar. You will notice that your shell just sits there waiting; that's because fifos block — they have to wait until the data has been read before they can return from writing it. Now in your second xterm, do cat foobar. You will see hello come out of that end of the pipe, and your first xterm will now have returned to a prompt. Weird.

Third are sockets. Sockets were created for easy network communication, and can either exist as network ("inet") sockets, listening on a port (any network server like apache or sshd would be an example of this), or as a file (a "unix domain socket"). Network sockets basically have no security; they're listening on an address/port combo and whatever the network slings their way will be taken in. Of course that's what firewalls and all that junk is for. Unix domain sockets are just files on the filesystem, and normal file permissions apply to them.

But of course, a socket listening on the network is not an inherintely insecure thing, you just have to make sure that the program itself is secure. sshd will accept a connection from anyone, but that doesn't mean that someone connecting to your ssh server can cause much harm.

The "maybe" fourth method is the X windowing system (X11, Xfree86, etc), which is not always on a unix system, but it is on many. X is more of a hairy thing to understand than the other things I mentioned. The only real method (that I know of) of communicating between X apps is by setting X "atoms," which are essentially global variables available to all X apps on a given server.

So for the most part, you can't do anything to hurt another process unless 1. you are its owner, or 2. it is written badly. If neither of those is the case, you are generally pretty safe from wreaking havoc on other processes. Unix security model rocks.

So even if you ran a hardened Windows 2000 box, for example, a poorly-written application could still have a vulnerable window messaging queue.

And furthermore, everything does not run "suid" in Windows, unless you specifically refer only to Windows 9x, which is deprecated anyway. guy explained in fewer words than I can why even with the NT security model enforcing credentials, why any class of exploits against a Windows service could still be devastating (not just this kind, which claims to transcend credentials completely).

But go ahead and argue vehemently and wave the Linux pom-poms all you want.

Not really, Windows programs run with the credentials of the user running them. The problem is most services run as SYSTEM and they create atleast 1 window handle which means they can recieve window messages and be exploited to give that user SYSTEM level credentials.

And event driven programming or whatever you want to call it, is needed for any OS that has programs that need to communicate with other.

In Linux programs only run at the level that you need them to run. IF YOU DON'T EXPLICITY ALOW PROGRAMS TO RUN AS ROOT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO MAKE ANY IMPACT ON THE REST OF THE OS. (other then using up resources, like filling up your home partition or using a percentage of cpu time..) which is the point I was trying to make and you missed.

For example If I had a browser like IE that has numerous security flaws in it's design that can allow anonymous websites to make me download and install programs without my knowledge, and I download and install a program that causes pop-unders that cause adds to pop up whenever I visit a website. This may affect me or any files or other programs I am running, but if someone else logs into my computer using a different user name they will never be affected by this, unless I run as root.

SO, linux is immune to this vunerability in windows, just like it is immune to about 90% of the security flaws that plague windows. Windows is designed for convenience, it's designed to get things done easily and with little user involvement as possible. In linux this is secondary over a security and stability, that's why it seems that it is much harder to use, because it requires your involvement in various things to prevent problems.

BTW I think a discussion about pipes would be more appropriate.

Say you downloaded and ran a linux virus.. (if you have a new version of linux.. Anything new in the past year or two, you don't have any viruses to worry about.) And this virus was designed to corrupt files, then it can only corrupt files you own. That's why you don't run as root or superuser unless you have to… Everything else will be immune to the infection.. any other users and system files won't be affected.

This is because any programs you run can only do what you can do. If you don't have rights then neither do the programs you run. THe one blaring example is suid programs. These programs will not run correctly unless they can access restricted parts of the OS/hardware. So for example X windows needs to access hardware in order to run, so parts of it have to pretend to be running a Root. Suid programs should and are kept to a minimum and are continuasly tested to make sure that they are safe and secure….

So no, this couldn't happen in Linux, unless something very remarkable was going on… which won't happen. Programs you run on the desktop cannot send system calls to other programs, they can only send calls that run under your authority. Just as long as the programs aren't sent to run in suid.. which 99% of them are not. As long as you keep your system up to date your about as secure from viruses and exploits as much is possible.

Windows this is a bigger issue because everything runs "suid". That's to make things easier and how the system was originally designed.. You only had one user. Newer versions of windows allow real user accounts to be set up, but due to the design if any one proccess becomes comprimized they probably have access unfettered access to your computer in some fasion, usually to install addware software or corrupt files or to simply copy itself and have you mail it to all your freinds and family, or associates you have in your address book. The divisions are tacked on on the top "user" end of the OS, if you can get past that layer, then your have control of the OS. In linux this division carries all the way down to the core part of the OS, the kernel… With exeptions of the suid programs that need special access to run properly…

It's not perfect and there are always going to be bugs and such, but they get fixed quicker and are more easily controlled then Windows.

I don't think that there is a way to check if the system clock has changed. The only real way I could see would be to do a system restore to an earlier point and see if the file had actually been created by then. But I am not positive that you can restore forward. And that is way too much trouble to go though for a paper.

Created and modified pulls information from your system clock. If you created it after your due date, then you will have to change your system clock then make a copy of the file, then change it to the time you want it modified and just put a space somewhere and then remove it. Save the document. Change your system clock back to what it is supposed to be.

If you actually did start the paper prior to the due date then you can simply skip the first part about creating it.

Of course, they've already done this, hence why they have a spec sheet stating the maximum operating voltage. I'm not sure what it is for a Northwood, but it is more of a suggestion than an omen. If you exceed this voltage by 0.05V or even 0.10V I'm sure your chip will last decades with retail cooling.

As for the original topic, I'm sure some person stated a voltage they thought was safe. Then through the wonders of the internet, it was turned into an unwritten Overclocker's Law that ye shall not exceed this value or risk penalties from the Great Overclocking Gods.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Old P3's (pre-tualatin) were not good overclockers over 1 GHz. Remember that whole scandal about 1.13 GHz not working stably. They just didn't have the yields on above 1 GHz CPU's back then. I'm amazed you got it to 1.33 GHz

Because they CAN. Why would intel run all their CPU's at the higher 1.7 voltage when they know they will run stably at lower voltages. Since they CPU's can run stably @ 1.5 V (obviously… I mean you can overclock northwoods 200+ MHz at stock speed) why would they increase the default voltage unnecessarily. They set the voltage to the minimum stable level. Also they always lower the core voltage after a die shrink.

Another point: all of these overclockers running P4's @ high voltages are EXACTLY WHAT INTEL NEEDS. We are like beta testers of the new P4's at high voltages. Since running a P4 @ 1.6 V or even 1.7V with slightly better than their current retail cooling is (apparently) not harming the chip whatsoever, Intel knows that they can increase the default voltage down the road safely. What this means is that, along with better yields, the P4 will hit 3 GHz easily very soon (less than 6 months) and most probably 4 GHz within a year or so at a slightly higher voltage.

I think you should explain what "increased temperatures" actually are.
Is it 10F over a nominal 120F operating temperature?
What is "good cooling"?
Does it mean a CPU with cryo cooling will last forever?

Here's something else that should be answered while you?re at it.

The answer is overvolting a CPU or other complex IC reduces its effective life span. By how much I don't know, as one needs to know the answer to question 3 above. This reduction has very little relevance to people here as most don't keep a CPU for more than a few years at the most.
When it comes to heat and electronic IC's you should know that many devices function perfectly fine in temps of 140F – 160F and they last quite a long time also so I don't think heat in itself is a killer of CPU's.
Because Intel and other CPU makers can't wait 5 or 10 years to give actual life cycle testing to CPU's, they do it virtually using accelerated computer simulations. This lets them know that x amount of voltage applied will allow a CPU to last X amount of years among other things.

As to the "dangers" of increased voltage. The only danger I can see is having to replace your $150 processor when you overclock it too much. Real chicken feed compared to adding a bit to much boost or timing to an automotive setup and destroying a $3500 motor.
Be happy that you can play close to the edge for so little $$

I believe your cD0 P3 1Ghz processor is a lillly-bit dud one. Yours wanting more voltage to run happily@ 1.33. Yours isn't causing electromigration. You've been using it for 5'ish months. You may not have found the exact amount of voltage you need to up it to make it completely stable. It seems 2.10V is most stable for u.

That was very very very good explanation and I am damn glad you brought it out. Lately, even with these new chips, many people think upping the voltage is still a quick way to kill their P4 Woodie's and Tualatin version of P3-S/Celeron chips. Many of them don't realize what the hell is in the chip. People have forgotten that the Coppermine chips have Aluminum interconnects whereas the Tualatin and P4 Woodie chips have "Copper" interconnects. Copper handles heat a lot higher than the Aluminum. It's proven fact. Ol'man has good explanation to this matter.

I think it is noted that overvolting produces heat and good cooling is needed. Extreme overvolting requires extreme cooling, etc.

thanks for the info….I have been trying to keep my 1.6a under 1.6 on the core voltage,
but not I think I will be a little more brave.

One note though… INcreasing voltage is one of the major proponents of increased heat…. Voltage increases raise heat more than mhz increases in most instances.

For example: an XP1600+ chip at 1400mhz, default voltage puts out 62W. The same chip, at 1400mhz, 2.1V would put out 89W. With the average heatsink C/W of .4, the extra 27W would mean a CPU temp increase of ~10.8C. (didn't have p4 northwood calc handy, so I used the amd power calc).

Of course, this isn't meant to take away from your informative post about EM and its dangers as well as urban "internet" myths regarding it. Just food for thought, for the person thinking about extreme overvolting…..

Either way, great post; keep up the good work! Btw, it's right on the money about how people say "dont increase the voltage", "don't overclock" when a higher clocked CPU is taking less damage than one running @ 100% load constantly!

I plug it into my home network access to the Internet and can VPN into work. Before I connect via VPN, is there any way I can share files and folders on my network?

Specifically, my work laptop “Dell running Win2K and is in a domain called” foo “that is set to work. My LAN has a Windows 98 machine with the name “Pavilion” that is working “bar”. Ive enabled file sharing and one of the shared folders on the Pavilion. Pavilion has enabled NetBUI. Dell was established to carry NetBUI, as determined by DHCP.

What should I do to be able to see and Dell use a file from the shared folder on the Pavilion to get into the workgroup “BAR”?

I really do not want to mess with my domain settings in a working group – is there a way I can do this without messing with the domain settings too much?

Still haven't given up yet though! Would it work to create a new user on the (Win2K) machine that uses the workgroup instead of the domain?

I have no luck trying to connect from the Win2K machine to the Windows XP machine.

I'll have to try to go from the Win98 machine to the Win2K machine using "net use" and see what happens.

Using the net use \\Pavilion (file://\\Pavilion) command (without a username since there are none set up on the Win98 machine), I get the following error:

System error 1311 has occurred.
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.

I've searched on the net, but not sure I understand how to fix this problem. Can someone explain what is happening and point me in the right direction?

I could really use some help with this. I use the win98 machine to browse and download stuff, but I need to be able to access the shared directories from my other machine in order to transfer the downloaded content over to be able to use it.
